If you ever find yourself with an unexpected piece of software popping up and asking to scan your PC.

STOP! DON’T BUY THIS   SOFTWARE!

Most likely it is “Rogue security software”
Source Wikipedia.org
“Rogue security software is a form of computer malware that deceives or misleads users into paying for the fake or simulated removal of malware. Rogue security software, in recent years, has become a growing and serious security threat in desktop computing.”

.

Step 1.

If your able download and run combofix.exe

If your prompted to update combofix I highly recommend you do so. Combofix should take around 15 to 20 mins to finish completely and most of the time will require a restart. You will see a log file open when it does finish listing off what it has found and removed.

Step 2.

Download and install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

During install your prompted to update, again you should do so. Scanning with this software is very easy and shouldn’t take longer than an hour. When finished let it remove any leftovers combofix didn’t remove.

Step 3.

Download and install Microsoft Security Essentials.

This is Microsoft’s free version of their Anti-virus. During install your prompted to update, and again do so. After install it preforms an update. Click the Home tab and choose a full scan. Depending on the size of your hard drive and number of infections this shouldn’t take longer than 2 hours.

You may want to run this trio of software Safe Mode.

What to Look For Rogue Spyware

  • Rogue anti-virus/spyware programs often generate more “alerts” than the software made by reputable companies.
  • You may be bombarded with pop-ups, even when you’re not online.
  • High-pressure sales copy will try to convince you to buy RIGHT NOW!
  • If you’ve been infected, your computer may dramatically slow down.
  • Other signs of infection include: new desktop icons; new wallpaper, or having your default homepage redirected to another site.

Hope this helped.
